WARM LEMON WATER + WHY I DRINK IT
I’m all for starting my day off right, and lately, that’s included drinking warm lemon water. I’ve mentioned drinking warm lemon water so many different times on my Youtube channel.
Guess who used to be the type of girl to reach for hot coffee right after rolling out of bed? Right here. But then, I started doing research on the benefits of drinking warm lemon water. I first read about it on The Skinny Confidential and the more I read, the more I become obsessed with this easy hack. You might be asking yourself, hack? What type of hack is drinking warm lemon water helping? Keep reading and let your mind be blown.
BENEFIT ONE: Balances PH
Get this, drinking lemon water will help reduce your body’s overall acidity. Lemon is crazy acidic and an alkaline food – and in case you’re not sure what alkaline is, here’s a great article. Citric acid doesn’t create acidity in the body once metabolized – and a bit of alkaline is oh so good for your body.
BENEFIT TWO: Helps Weight Loss + Curbs Appetite
Sometimes when you feel hungry, it’s more your mind then your body telling you that. If I’m ever feeling hungry, I drink a glass of water and grab an apple to curb my appetite. However, since drinking warm lemon water in the morning, my appetite in the morning isn’t quite as needy. I read a study that revealed drinking 17 ozs of water before breakfast decreased calories consumed in the meal by 13%!
BENEFIT THREE: It’s Diuretic
Lemons are a natural diuretic. AKA – makes you pee and keeps the bloat off. Less bloat is an instant win to me! The diuretic effect makes me feel less full and I’m flushing out additional toxins in my body. Even though you should drink warm lemon water every morning, it’s especially helpful for when you’re hitting the pool or beach in the afternoon. 😉
BENEFIT FOUR: Tip-Top Immune
Lemon water is high in Vitamin C, potassium, and folate! All these are great for your immune system and will instantly boost.
Additionally, Vitamin C also helps fight against sickness (like the common cold). I will drink warm lemon with honey and ginger when I start to feel sick.
BENEFIT FIVE: Hello, Clear Skin!
Water keeps your skin hydrated and glowing, adding in lemon increases your vitamin C intake. Vitamin C helps eliminate toxins in your skin, lemon juice is a natural antibacterial agent. Drinking it can fight against harmful bacteria in your bloodstream!
As you can tell, there are so many reasons to start your day with warm lemon water vs. a hot cup of coffee (but you definitely don’t have to remove coffee from your diet altogether). This hack for beginning your day healthy and clean is so simple, with long lasting effects! As we jump into summer, I’ll definitely be adding lemon to my cold water to drink throughout the day, too.
BUT WAIT, HERE’S A QUICK TIP
Too much lemon may erode tooth enamel. However, I’ve been using glass straws and drinking a cup of water afterwards to rinse. Be careful with your consumption of lemon!
